About Forging Knives

Forging metal is one
of the oldest art forms
and tool making crafts
known to man. Early
Biblical writings
mention Tubal - Cain
who worked in metal.
Man has progressed
substantially in the
last several thousand
years, yet the basic technique remains the same.

forging a piece of metal

Forging a knife is simply the art of reshaping a piece of metal, with fire and hammer, into an edged tool or work of art. It is hot, sweaty work, yet satisfying as the smith creates a piece of art from an otherwise ordinary piece of steel. Crafting this piece is only part of the equation. However, if the wrong metal is used or improper heat treatment performed, it still remains just a piece of steel.

Forging in fire

I use quality high carbon steels in creating blades. I use primarily 5160, but also 01,1095, 1084 and L6 in forging blades. My goal is to create a blade that is both tough and capable of holding an excellent cutting edge.

My forged blades are differentially heat treated to achieve maximum ductility and edge retention.

Forged knives usually feature a stick tang, although some styles feature a full tang. Full tang knives sometimes feature a tapered tang depending on style and steel thickness.
